10 ways to lose your licence

Not only are new drivers more likely to crash, but they are allowed fewer penalty points before losing their licence. If a driver acquires six or more penalty points within two years of passing their first test, their licence is revoked. They must then obtain a provisional licence, drive as a learner (display an 'L'Plate and be supervised) and pass the theory and practical driving tests again.

  1. Drink driving - this will result in an instant 12 month ban that will stay on your record for 11 years.
  2. Drug driving - An instant ban for at least 12 months
  3. Speeding - You'll get between three and six points.
  4. Red light jumping - Three points.
  5. Tyres - if your tyres are worn below the minimum tread depth of 1.6mm you will get three points on your licence.
  6. Mobile phone - using your phone will get you three points on your licence.
  7. No insurance - Driving without insurance will get you 6 to 8 points, and the police may take your car. It'll cost you £150 to get it back plus daily storage.
  8. Careless Driving
  9. Driving off - If you're in a smash (or even a bump) make sure you stop and exchange detail, otherwise it's anywhere between three and nine points.
  10. Abandoning your car - if you leave your car in a dangerous position it could be towed away and you will get three points
